It's our firm belief at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), that to enhance the skills of our students, they must be provided with opportunities to explore their creativity. Cultural programs are organized several times during the year to encourage creative pursuits and nurture talent. Students form teams and share responsibility in organizing the events.

As one subsides and steps onto the campus, he/she comes across a divergent and distinguished culture bubbling with effervescence and efficiency. Every individual here learns and lucubrates to follow his and her passion with dedication and dynamism, also efficaciously managing their academics. They're enlightened and edified with human values and competently complete with the challenges of their lives

Milan - The Cultural Fest
The very name translates to a get-together, sure, but Milan, the cultural extravaganza of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) offers so much more. Milan is a National level cultural event that hosts events for tens of thousands of students who fly in from various parts of the country. There is a plethora of variety in the events that take place, which to name a few are, "Fashion Show"for the aspiring models, "Talkathon" for the wannabe debators, "Short film screening" for the upcoming 'James Cameroons' and a DJ Night, for the nocturnals. Over a period of time, Milan has evolved to a great extent that CHIEF celebrities from the film industry like, Kamal Haasan, John Abraham, 'Chiyaan' Vikram, Shreya Ghoshal and et al A-listers have graced the occasion. An absolute delight to look forward to, for it caters to the craving minds of thrill-seekers, philosophers and the educational enthusiasts. One wouldn't want to miss the "Sunburn of the south", with fun manifold, would they?

Tarana - The SRM Talent Fest
Tarana happens once a year and it's the perfect opportunity for all talented students from colleges and institutions under the SRM banner to participate in the competitions and showcase their creative talent. Dance, light music, classical music, fashion show, literary debates, craft and lots of other events are organized and leading celebrities are invited to judge the events. There's competition and a spirit of camaraderie too as students from various streams come together to participate, compete and win prizes.

Shuru - The Icebreaker
Marked as "The Beginning, Shuru is an extravagant round of competitions where the Freshers are given an opportunity, encouraged to indulge themselves in various Clubs such as music, dance, theatre and what not.

Celebrations
All major Indian festivals are celebrated in the campus with complete enthusiasm and enjoyment. Lushing lunches are explicitly made in students' hostels to mark these festivities and to give the students a taste of the region's culinary traditions.

Yoga
The nature of yoga is to shine the light of awareness into the darkest corners of the body, it's a journey of the self, to the self and through the self. Yoga sessions are conducted for the students here on a regular basis, honing their inner selves, to making them better, efficient individuals.

SRM Centre for Performing and Fine Arts (CPFA)
SRM CPFA is the cultural identity of SRMIST. The vision of this department is to provide students a platform for artistic endeavors, to tap their artistic talents and hone them. Here, you will find students from different disciplines like Engineering, Medicines, Arts and Science coming together to pursue their passion in Performing Arts. The Centre boasts of a world class Faculty, facilities and offers certificate courses in Performing Arts like Carnatic Vocal Music, Carnatic Violin, Mridangam, Keyboard and Guitar. Training is given for Grade Certificate exams in Western Classical Music offered by the Trinity College of Music, London. SRM is a Registered Exam Centre of the Trinity College of Music, London.Annual Music and Dance Festivals are organized by the CPFA during important festivals.

Mini India on campus
Beautiful it is; God's raw land; home, happiness, love, freedom; all hand in hand - a paradox; A place of morals in a time of Westernization. A land where humanity presents itself in its most dazzling way, with a creative burst of culture and religions, races and tongues. Feel, cherish, love, admire and adore - a perfect description of not just India but the mini-India on the grand campus of SRM as well. The wonderful spectacle of 'Unity in Diversity' can be well witnessed here in the campus.

ATHLETICS & FITNESS

Sporting Excellence...
SRM has excellent sports and recreation facilities on campus, with dedicated facilities for tennis, basketball, badminton, volley ball, yoga and various other sports. Students participate regularly in Inter Collegiate, Inter University and State Level Tournaments and have won laurels for SRM.

Fitness Centre
For students to stay fit and healthy, all hostels are equipped with gym and fitness centre facilities - treadmill, exercise bikes and more of the latest fitness equipment. The central gym for men at SRM is also equipped with body building equipment. All gyms and fitness centers are open both in the morning and evening hours.

A healthy body and a healthy mind with Yoga
Yoga sessions are conducted for students to help them maintain both healthy body and mind.

STUDENT LIFE

Getting around the Campus...
Walking and cycling are the most popular ways to get around the SRM campus. And with state-of-the-art security and 24 hour emergency services, it's the safest place to be.
The SRM group runs a fleet of buses for transporting students to and from the city and to other areas. Public transport buses and trains also ply to points near the campuses.

Campus Lifestyle...
It's a diverse community of students at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), and the activities on offer are as diverse and varied too. From entertainment to extra-curricular or even religious pursuits, there's never a dull moment on campus. Student Affairs
All activity related to extracurricular programs, forums, clubs, community service, and entrepreneurship cell and students council are managed by the student affairs department. Counselors are available to guide students and share personal issues.

Housing & Dining
The student accommodation at SRM is a "home away from home". There are separate hostels for men and women on the campus, with all facilities for study and recreation. Besides hostel dining facility, there are food outlets and cafes too, open 12 to 15 hours a day.

Diversity
It's a 'mini India' out here at the SRM university campus - with students from all over India and other parts of the world. The campus reflects this cosmopolitan aspect of the student community, with celebrations of regional festivals.

Community Centers
Students are initiated into community service at SRM, and are encouraged to actively participate in the many social initiatives such as Annsh - the school for drop-outs, Butterflies project - the cultural and sports forum for underprivileged children, etc.

Clubs
Several clubs are active on the SRM university campus, initiated by enthusiastic students. The Robotics Club is a good example, motivating students, distributing low cost kits, conducting workshops and organizing competitions.

Religious Life
There are prayer halls on campus, for all the major religions.

COMMUNITY RADIO

Muthucharam Community Radio, operating at the frequency of 90.4 Mhz, has been established inside the SRM University campus to serve the source of the people in the coverage area. The programs focus on education, health, environment, agriculture, rural and community development. Today, this has become the pulse of the community, which serves to create an informed, educated and a confident community. The format, presentation, language and subject will reflect and project the local flavour and fragrance. The members of the community, who frequently take part in the production of shows, fulfill the objective of improving lives and thoughts of target audience and provide to their specific interests and demands.

Objectives
Muthucharam CR persuades:

  • To uplift the state of a community almost in all dimensions of their everyday lives.
  • Ensuring access to and encouraging participation in the medium of community radio.
  • To promote income generating and self-employment activities
  • To provide information that is not readily available in rural areas
  • To widen the awareness range of the community about employment and educational career opportunities.
  • Networking with various organizations and groups towards a common purpose
  • To improve the community, certainly, we need to spare our high focus on women and their contribution to the society. Hence, to empower women, programmes on health environment and self-employment are being produced in frequent slots
  • To protect the interest of vulnerable people in the community; especially widows, children, the aged and the disabled

PUBLIC SERVICE

There are many opportunities at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) for students to engage in service to the community - through healthcare camps, blood donation, advocacy campaigns or working with schools for the underprivileged.
Students are encouraged to take up community service through NSS or join any of the community service projects, to give back to the community.

National Service Scheme (NSS)
The NSS unit at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) has more than 1000 registered students. Prof. T. Rajasekaran, Department of Mechanical Engineering is the Programme Co-ordinator.

National Cadet Corps(NCC)
The objective of National Cadet Corps is to develop character, comradeship, and capacity for leadership among youth in India. NCC at SRM motivates the students with best training and the ideals of selfless service. The training inculcates team spirit, a sense of nationalism and it also helps in developing the overall personality of an individual. The SRM NCC (Senior Division-SD) under 1 (Tamilnadu) Signal Company NCC [1 (TN) SIG COY NCC] was started in August 1996. The first and the second year students are enrolled for the duration of three years. We also enroll girls in the NCC since 2005 and the total allotted strength including girls is 83. The Obstacle Area was established in the year 2009 to train the cadets. NCC parades are regularly conducted in Dr. T. P. Ganesan Auditorium Ground on every Saturday from 7.00 to 11.00 AM as per Parade Schedule. Pre-parade meeting is also conducted in front of the NCC Office on every Friday from 5.30 to 6.30 PM

CASTE DISCRIMINATION

"We are Indians, firstly & lastly": Dr. Ambedkar
Caste prejudiced violence and sentiments are rising throughout our nation. Cutting across the religious and cultural divide, such hostility threaten the community of minorities. In the land where leaders like Gandhi and Ambedkar relentlessly strived for the abolition of the caste system, we now have instances of discrimination in educational institutions. This sorry state of affairs is highly condemned by the UGC and Indian Law. Being temples of learning, educational institutions should inculcate in the minds of faculty and students that people should protect and defend the dignity of each individual through respect for human rights and the rule of law.

With a view to providing a safe and secure learning ambiance for the students, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) takes every possible step to eradicate any form of caste - based prejudices and discrimination in its facilities. The management along with the complete support of its faculty and staff has been able to maintain a peaceful environment where no sign of discrimination is tolerated. With its 25 plus years of meritorious service in the educational sector, the SRM Group has built its positive reputation among people of the different strata of the society. Merits-based and other need based Scholarships are given to deserving candidates. SRMU has to its credit a globally acknowledged multicultural educational space. Within SRMU we value learning, mutual respect, teamwork, and diverse points of view.

SRMU has set motivated goals for accomplishing measurable out comes as to make a difference in our students' lives. The University has left no stone unturned to set an environment of freedom to the students during their stay here in the campus. In case there is a situation where in the student / faculty feels let down or humiliated due to some callous comment of someone or if he / she feels that they are being targeted by a particular faculty / peers due to their extremist and biased belief in caste, the person can lodge a complaint in the prescribed form that will reach a senior University official, which will be followed by an enquiry for justice to be delivered.

    Ragging constitutes one or more of any of the following acts :

  • Any conduct by any student or students whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student.
  • Indulging in rowdy or indisciplined activities by an y student or students which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in any fresher or any other student.
  • Asking any student to do any act which such student will not in the ordinary course do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame, or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of such fresher or any other student.
  • Any act by a senior student that prevents, disrupts or disturbs the regular academic activity of any other student or a fresher.


  • Actions Suggested by AICTE against students indulging and abetting in Ragging:

  • The punishment to be meted out to the persons indulged in ragging has to be exemplary and justifiably harsh to act as a deterrent against recurrence of such incidents. The students who are found to be indulged in ragging should be debarred from taking admission in any technical institution in India.
  • Every single incident of ragging a First Information Report (FIR) must be filed without exception by the institutional authorities with the local police authorities.
  • The institutional authority shall intimate the incidents of ragging occurred in their premises along with actions taken to the Council immediately after occurrence of such incident and inform the status of the case from time to time.
  • Courts should make an effort to ensure that cases involving ragging are taken up on priority basis to send the correct message that ragging is not only to be discouraged but also to be dealt with sternness.
  • CONSTITUTION OF INTERNAL COMPLAINTS COMMITTEE

    National Service Scheme (NSS)

    About NSS:
    National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Mahatma Gandhi Centenary year 1969 and aimed at developing student’s personality through community service. The overall objective of National Service is educational. This objective is attained through the service to the community. National Service Scheme (NSS) is a permanent youth Program under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India and funded by Government of Tamilnadu and Government of India.

    OBJECTIVES:

    The overall objective of NSS is Personality Development through community service. The objectives of NSS are to:

    • Understand the community in which they workUnderstand themselves in relation to their community.
    • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
    • Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
    • Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems.
